Museum of Contemporary Craft to Present Inaugural Hallie Ford Fellows Exhibition

Portland, OR – March 15, 2012 – The Ford Family Foundation, in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Craft, announces the first exhibition of the work by its Hallie Ford Fellows in the Visual Arts, scheduled to open January 24, 2013 and run through the Fall of 2014 at both Oregon and out-of-state museums. The exhibition will be curated by a curator of national prominence to be announced in Spring of 2012. The Hallie Ford Fellowships, three awarded each year in the amount of $25,000, are one facet of The Foundation’s five year Visual Arts Program that it launched in February of 2010 to support the creation, production, exhibition, documentation, and acquisition of work by seasoned Oregon visual artists.

Generations: Betty Feves

January 26, 2012—Portland, OR— The capstone exhibition of Museum of Contemporary Craft’s 75th Anniversary Year, Generations: Betty Feves is a comprehensive retrospective of work by this important Northwest Modernist ceramic artist. Opening March 15, 2012, the exhibition will include work from every period of her 40-year career which began with studies under Clyfford Still and Alexander Archipenko, included studies in New York City during World War II, and later, decades in Pendleton, Oregon.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services Awards $61,000 to Museum of Contemporary Craft

October 25, 2011 - PORTLAND, OR - Museum of Contemporary Craft (MoCC) has been awarded a $61,000 Museums for America Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The grant supports the development of Generations: Betty Feves, a retrospective exhibition of work by this major Oregon ceramicist. Part of the Museum’s 75th Anniversary celebration, the exhibition highlights the strong history of ceramics at the Museum and in the Northwest and celebrates the crucial role of women in the history of contemporary art. The exhibition opens March 15, 2012 and will travel to the Pendleton Art Center in Pendleton, Oregon. The IMLS grant matches major support for this exhibition from the Whiteman Foundation, The Collins Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust, and individual donors.

Museum of Contemporary Craft Announces $300,000 Grant to Support Exhibitions

Museum of Contemporary Craft (MoCC) has received a three-year grant of $300,000 from an anonymous donor to support exhibitions and programs. The Museum recently celebrated the second anniversary of its partnership with Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA). “This gift, the largest for exhibition and public program support in our 75-year history, is indicative of the increased level of support the Museum has been able to attract since the partnership with PNCA,” said Jeffrey Thomas, acting director. The grant, which runs through June 2014, will require the organization to match $100,000 in additional gifts in each of the last two years of the award.

Studio H: Design. Build. Transform.

This November, the Museum of Contemporary Craft offers the Portland community an opportunity to immerse itself in the design process with the exhibition Studio H: Design. Build. Transform. The exhibition asks viewers to reflect on how that process can teach the next generation of designers to transform the world for themselves. Artifacts from the studio classroom in rural Bertie County, North Carolina where Pilloton teaches design thinking to high-school students will be on display to illustrate how a socially engaged design process can result in significant and positive solutions.

75 Gifts for 75 Years Honors Museum’s History Through Community Giving

Organized by the Museum of Contemporary Craft, the exhibition 75 Gifts for 75 Years celebrates an important milestone in the history of one of the oldest modern craft institutions in the United States. Through generous gifts by artists, collectors, craftspeople and gallerists from Portland and other regions, important gaps in the Museum’s collections are being filled, enabling the Museum to better tell the story of craft’s role in shaping culture and history. Featuring over 75 objects from private collections and artist studios, the new gifts on view span the entire history of the Museum.

PNCA Breaks Spring Gala Fundraising Record

On Saturday, June 4, Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) held its 9th annual gala, Mixed Media on Pavement, and successfully raised more than $440,000 in sponsorships and special appeal gifts. Contributions support PNCA students, faculty and programs. In addition, the event helps support programs and exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Craft, which has operated in partnership with PNCA since 2009. Together with PNCA’s 3rd Annual Benefit Art Auction in February, which raised $130,000 for scholarships, and with a special challenge grant from the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation, PNCA raised $610,000, surpassing previous special event fundraising records.

MoCC Surveys Mid-Century Pacific Northwest Ceramics

Museum of Contemporary Craft presents Northwest Modern: Revisiting the Annual Ceramic Exhibitions of 1950-64, an examination of juried exhibitions held at the Oregon Ceramic Studio (OCS), now Museum of Contemporary Craft. Concurrent with the Museum’s 75th anniversary year, the exhibition provides visitors with a deeper look into an important time period during which MoCC played a pivotal role in defining new, modern forms and ideas about ceramics.
